Baby Christmas Jumpers for Christmas Jumper Day 2026

Cream text card: baby Christmas jumpers for Jumper Day 2026, with tiles for 10 December, six no-sew ideas and a 3-week plan

Baby Christmas jumpers for Christmas Jumper Day, which Save the Children has set for Thursday 10 December 2026, can be bought, re-used or made without sewing: drawn, painted or ironed onto a plain top. Check the size on our age map, put a name label inside, and send a spare top to nursery.

By the Babbez team · Baby and toddler Christmas guide · Checked October 2026

Key takeaways

  • The No-Sew Jumper Board: six ideas, from a fabric-pen snowman (about 20 minutes hands-on) to festive colours your child already owns.
  • The Flat-Fix Rule: everything on the jumper lies flat and is fixed to the fabric.
  • A dated plan from Mon 16 Nov, with the Wash Test in Week 3.
  • Nursery dress-up days: what to send, and what a government test of Halloween costumes found.

Should you buy, re-use or make a baby Christmas jumper?

The honest answer is that a baby doesn’t need a new jumper. Three routes:

  • Buy: The quickest route. Check the care label, and look for a wide neck or poppers.
  • Re-use: Last year's jumper, a hand-me-down, a swap with a friend or a charity shop find.
  • Make: A plain top and one idea from the No-Sew Jumper Board below.

Looking for a plain top to decorate? See our baby clothes and toddler clothes.

What are easy no-sew Christmas jumper ideas for babies?

Our No-Sew Jumper Board below covers fabric pens, a stencil, an iron-on patch, bonded felt shapes, a jumper you already have and festive colours.

Each made idea follows the Flat-Fix Rule: everything on the jumper lies flat and is fixed to the fabric, whether drawn, painted, printed or ironed on. A flat design goes through the wash and a day of crawling, climbing and lunch.

The No-Sew Jumper Board
Idea You need Hands-on (min, our estimate) Notes
Fabric-pen snowman A plain pale top, fabric pens, a sheet of card to slip inside 20 Draw on a flat table with the card inside; set the ink as the pen pack says
Stencilled star Fabric paint, a sponge, a card or freezer-paper stencil about 10 cm (4 inches) across 30 A toddler can pick the colour while you dab the paint on; leave to dry as the pack says
Iron-on festive patch A shop-bought embroidered iron-on patch, an iron, a tea towel 10 Place it on the front below the neckline; iron as the patch pack says
No-sew felt tree Felt or cotton offcuts, iron-on bonding web, an iron 30 The bonding web fuses the shapes flat to the top; follow its pack for heat and time
A jumper already in the drawer Last year's jumper, a hand-me-down or a swap 0 Check it still fits with the age map; a stain can hide under an iron-on patch
Festive colours A red, green or white top they already have 0 The quickest option for a young baby; ask the nursery whether festive colours count

Hands-on minutes are our estimates for one top, not counting drying or setting time, which depends on the product. Follow each pen, paint, patch or bonding-web pack for heat and time.

Who runs Christmas Jumper Day, and can a nursery pick another day?

Save the Children runs Christmas Jumper Day as a yearly fundraising day. According to its Christmas Jumper Day page, Save the Children’s official 2026 date is Thursday 10 December.

Save the Children also says a school, workplace or group can mark it on another day if that works better, so a nursery’s day may differ: go by its letter. The page’s schools section speaks to anyone organising the day for a school, nursery or youth group.

Save the Children’s first Christmas Jumper Day took place on 14 December 2012. Babbez is not connected with Save the Children; we report its published event facts.

What should you send for a nursery or childminder dress-up day?

A Christmas jumper isn’t a must for a baby: the nursery letter says what counts there.

  • Read the nursery letter: the day, and whether a jumper, festive colours or fancy dress is asked for.
  • Write your child's name inside the jumper with a laundry marker or an iron-on name label.
  • Send a spare top, because lunch and paint happen.
  • Pick a top that goes on and off easily: a wide neck or shoulder poppers.
  • Ask what happens at nap time if the jumper is still on.

For naps and night-time, see nhs.uk and The Lullaby Trust’s safer sleep pages. Out for a walk on the day? Our UK cold-weather dressing guide covers outdoor layers.

Choosing fancy dress instead of a jumper?

In June 2024 tests, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) bought Halloween fancy dress costumes for children from a range of online marketplaces and tested them against the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. OPSS reports on gov.uk that of 128 Halloween costumes aimed at children under 7 years old, more than 80% failed basic safety tests.

OPSS said all the costumes that failed had since been removed from sale by the platforms. The costumes were picked for low price, poor reviews and apparent low quality, so they are not necessarily representative of all products sold by online marketplaces.

In its 22 October 2024 warning, OPSS urged the public to always buy costumes from trusted sources and take care near fires, particularly open flames.

OPSS also reported that 74 of the Halloween costumes were tested against BS EN 14682:2014, the safety standard for cords and drawstrings on children’s clothing, and 61 failed. OPSS adds that head and neck drawstrings or cords can also strangle or entrap children, so always check for long cords or other strangulation hazards.

What size should a baby’s Christmas jumper be?

By age, pick the band that covers your baby on the day they will wear it; if the shop’s chart gives a height (cm or inches) or weight (kg or lb), go by that instead. Our baby’s first Christmas guide has the Christmas-Age Map, and its Turnover Rule covers a jumper you want to last.

A baby born on the 11th to the 25th of a month is one month younger, in completed months, on 10 December than on 25 December; any other birth date gives the same age on both days. For example, a baby born on 15 March 2026 is 8 months old on 10 December and 9 on Christmas Day.

We checked every birth date in the last two years. On the usual UK month bands up to two years (labels vary by shop), these babies move into the next band between the two days:

  • Born 11–25 Sep 2026: turns 3 months after Jumper Day, by Christmas Day.
  • Born 11–25 Jun 2026: turns 6 months after Jumper Day, by Christmas Day.
  • Born 11–25 Mar 2026: turns 9 months after Jumper Day, by Christmas Day.
  • Born 11–25 Dec 2025: turns 12 months after Jumper Day, by Christmas Day.
  • Born 11–25 Jun 2025: turns 18 months after Jumper Day, by Christmas Day.
  • Born 11–25 Dec 2024: turns 2 years after Jumper Day, by Christmas Day.

To measure your baby for a shop’s chart, see our UK baby grow size guide.

How do you wash a Christmas jumper so the design lasts?

Try the Wash Test first: before the day, wash the finished top once, inside out, as the care label and the pen, paint or patch pack allow, after the setting time on the pack. If the design fades, cracks or lifts, you find out at home, not on the morning of Jumper Day. If a patch or felt shape lifts, take it off before the top is worn again.

  • Read the care label first, and the pen, paint or patch pack for the design.
  • Wait for the setting time on the pack before the first wash.
  • Turn the top inside out and wash it cool, for example at 30°C (86°F), if the label allows.
  • Skip the tumble dryer unless the label and the design pack both allow it.
  • Dry knitted jumpers flat and reshape them while damp.
  • Iron on the inside, never straight onto the design, if ironing at all.
  • Store a knit folded rather than on a hanger, so the shoulders keep their shape.

Frequently asked questions

Can a baby take part in Christmas Jumper Day?

Yes. At home, a festive top is enough; at nursery, its letter says what to send. Save the Children’s schools section speaks to anyone organising the day for a school, nursery or youth group.

What can a baby wear instead of a Christmas jumper?

A red, green or white top they already have, or last year’s jumper, a hand-me-down or a swap. Ask the nursery whether festive colours count.

How do you decorate a baby jumper without sewing?

Use fabric pens, a stencil and fabric paint, an embroidered iron-on patch or iron-on bonding web, and follow each pack for heat and time.

How do you wash a jumper with fabric paint on it?

Wait for the setting time on the pack before the first wash, then wash it inside out and cool, for example at 30°C (86°F), if the label allows.

What if the nursery holds it on a different day?

Save the Children says a group can choose another day if that works better, so move the plan to the nursery’s date.
