Thanksgiving Activities for Toddlers: A 7-Day Printable Plan

Cream card reading Thanksgiving Activities for Toddlers, a 7-day printable plan, above seven day boxes and the babbez logo

By the Babbez team · Holiday play plan · Checked October 2026

Easy Thanksgiving activities for toddlers are short, low-prep ones made from things already at home. Our plan gives one a day for the week ending on Thanksgiving Day, which OPM’s federal holiday list puts on Thursday, November 26, 2026: a leaf hunt, two paper turkeys, a color match, a parade, a teddy dinner and a draw-on table cover.

Key takeaways

  • About 34 minutes of set-up covers the whole week.
  • Messy days fall on the weekend: the glue-stick turkey is Saturday, the paint handprint is Sunday, and Monday to Thursday are all level 1 (Dry) on our Mess Scale.
  • On Thanksgiving Day, set out only what your toddler already knows, so play keeps going while you cook.

What are easy Thanksgiving activities for toddlers? A 7-day plan

Each day has one activity, a set-up time, a mess level and what your toddler practices. We checked each activity against CDC’s two Positive Parenting Tips pages for toddlers, and the age band shows which page the idea comes from, 1–2 or 2–3 years (CDC). The band isn’t a limit, just the source of the idea.

The Babbez Thanksgiving Week Plan
Day Activity Age band (CDC tips page) Prep (our estimate) Mess level What they practice
Fri, Nov 20 Leaf hunt walk 1–2 and 2–3 (CDC) about 2 min set-up 1 finding the leaves you name (a red one, a big one) and carrying the bag; keep the biggest leaves for Saturday
Sat, Nov 21 Leaf turkey on a paper plate 1–2 (CDC) about 5 min set-up 2 sticking leaves around the rim as feathers, then pointing to the head, eyes and feet as you name them
Sun, Nov 22 Handprint turkey 1–2 (CDC) about 5 min set-up 3 pressing a painted hand on the paper (you add the beak and legs with a marker)
Mon, Nov 23 Feather color match 1–2 (CDC) about 10 min set-up 1 dropping each paper feather into the cup of the same color
Tue, Nov 24 Turkey parade 2–3 (CDC) about 2 min set-up 1 marching behind you and copying your gobble, stomp and tiptoe
Wed, Nov 25 Pretend Thanksgiving dinner for the teddies 2–3 (CDC) about 5 min set-up 1 serving the teddies, then saying their own name and age the way they will greet tomorrow’s guests
Thu, Nov 26 Draw-on table cover and a find-it job 1–2 (CDC) about 5 min set-up 1 coloring the paper cover, and finding the napkins and carrying one to each place when you ask

Materials from home

  • Friday, 1–2 and 2–3 (CDC): a paper grocery bag; coats and shoes
  • Saturday, 1–2 (CDC): a paper plate 9 inches (about 23 cm) across, a glue stick, Friday’s leaves, a scrap of brown paper bag for the head and feet (you cut them), a marker for the eyes
  • Sunday, 1–2 (CDC): washable paint on an old plate, a sheet of printer paper (8.5 x 11 inches, about 22 x 28 cm), an old towel underneath, a top you don’t mind staining, a marker
  • Monday, 1–2 (CDC): construction paper in 4 colors (sheets 9 x 12 inches, about 23 x 30 cm) cut into 12 feathers, each about 6 inches (15 cm) long; 4 paper cups with a strip of each color taped on
  • Tuesday, 2–3 (CDC): Monday’s paper feathers tucked into a waistband; a pot and a wooden spoon as the drum
  • Wednesday, 2–3 (CDC): plastic bowls and cups, a dish towel as the tablecloth, stuffed animals as guests
  • Thursday, 1–2 (CDC): kraft paper about 18 inches (46 cm) wide or a paper tablecloth, painter’s tape, chunky crayons; Saturday’s leaf turkeys as place mats

The CDC tip behind each day

  • Friday, leaf hunt: CDC lists for toddlers 1–2 years: “Encourage your toddler's curiosity and ability to recognize common objects by taking field trips together to the park or going on a bus ride.” CDC lists for toddlers 2–3 years: “Help your child to explore things around them by taking them on a walk or wagon ride.”
  • Saturday’s leaf turkey and Thursday’s find-it job: CDC lists for toddlers 1–2 years: “Ask them to find objects for you or name body parts and objects.”
  • Sunday, handprint turkey: CDC lists for toddlers 1–2 years: “Encourage them to explore and try new things.”
  • Monday, feather match: CDC lists for toddlers 1–2 years: “Play matching games with your toddler, like shape sorting and simple puzzles.”
  • Tuesday, parade: CDC’s positive parenting tips for toddlers 2–3 years include: “Play parade or follow the leader with your toddler.”
  • Wednesday, teddy dinner: CDC lists for toddlers 2–3 years: “Encourage your child to take part in pretend play.” CDC lists for toddlers 2–3 years: “Encourage your child to tell you their name and age.”

How messy are these Thanksgiving crafts? The Babbez Mess Scale

We rate each activity by what ends up on hands and table, from level 1 (Dry) to level 3 (Wet), and schedule by the Weekend-Mess Rule: the sticky and the wet day go on the weekend, when there is time to clean up.

  • Level 1 Dry: paper, crayons, tape, leaves. Set-up: a clear table or a patch of floor. Clean-up: drop the pieces in a bag or box.
  • Level 2 Sticky: a glue stick or tape on small hands. Set-up: a wipe-clean table. Clean-up: wipe hands and table.
  • Level 3 Wet: paint or water on hands. Set-up: an old towel underneath and a top you don’t mind staining. Clean-up: wash hands, then wash the top.

That is why Monday to Thursday all stay at level 1: the days before Thanksgiving actually have enough going on without paint near the cooking.

Which Thanksgiving crafts are easy for toddlers?

The plan’s crafts are the leaf turkey, the handprint turkey and the feather match, and two days reuse the day before: Friday’s leaves become Saturday’s feathers, and Monday’s paper feathers march in Tuesday’s parade. For the leaf turkey:

  1. Cut a head and two feet from a brown paper bag and draw the eyes with a marker.
  2. Rub the glue stick all the way around the rim of the paper plate.
  3. Your toddler presses the leaves on as feathers, as many as they like.
  4. Glue on the head and feet, then name the parts together: head, eyes, feathers, feet.

If toys with small parts or balloons join the day, CPSC’s holiday gift tips say: “Keep balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than three and keep deflated balloons away from children younger than eight.”

How do I keep a toddler busy while I cook Thanksgiving dinner?

The honest answer is the Familiar-Only Rule: on the day, use only what your toddler already knows from the week. A new craft needs you at the table, and you will be at the stove. Pack this kit the night before:

  • the paper table cover, painter’s tape and chunky crayons from the plan
  • the leaf turkeys as place mats
  • the feather cups for a quiet matching game
  • Wednesday’s teddy guests and their bowls
  • a picture book
  • a spare top

Set out one item at a time and swap it when interest drops; for more no-buy ideas, see our rainy-day indoor activities for toddlers. For the kitchen and the table, here are three of CDC’s toddler safety tips, word for word (CDC’s pages list more):

  • CDC lists for toddlers 1–2 years: “Keep kitchen appliances, irons, and heaters out of reach of your toddler. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.”
  • CDC lists for toddlers 2–3 years: “Do NOT hold hot drinks while your child is sitting on your lap. Sudden movements can cause a spill and might result in your child being burned.”
  • CDC lists for toddlers 2–3 years: “Encourage your toddler not to put pencils or crayons in their mouth when coloring or drawing.”

What should a toddler wear for Thanksgiving crafts and dinner?

Dress for the plan, not the photo: a top you don’t mind staining for Sunday’s paint (see our guide to getting stains out of baby clothes), a layer to peel off after Friday’s walk (see our toddler outfit guide), and an easy-to-change outfit plus the spare top on the day.

If getting dressed is the battle, try our no-fight dressing tips; there is more in our toddler clothes guide and toddler clothes.

When is Thanksgiving, and when does the plan week start?

According to OPM’s federal holiday list, Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026; by our calendar count, that is the fourth Thursday of November. The plan always runs Friday to Thursday, so for later years we counted back from each date on the same federal list:

Thanksgiving and the plan week, 2026 to 2030 (federal list)
Year Thanksgiving Day Plan week (our arithmetic: Thanksgiving Day minus 6 days) Source
2026 Thursday, November 26 Friday, November 20 to Thursday, November 26 OPM federal list
2027 Thursday, November 25 Friday, November 19 to Thursday, November 25 OPM federal list
2028 Thursday, November 23 Friday, November 17 to Thursday, November 23 OPM federal list
2029 Thursday, November 22 Friday, November 16 to Thursday, November 22 OPM federal list
2030 Thursday, November 28 Friday, November 22 to Thursday, November 28 OPM federal list

Frequently asked questions

What can toddlers do for Thanksgiving?

Short, low-prep activities from things at home: a leaf hunt, two paper turkeys, a feather color match, a parade, a teddy dinner and a draw-on table cover. Our plan gives one a day.

How can a toddler help on Thanksgiving Day?

Give one small find-it job, like carrying a napkin to each place. CDC lists for toddlers 1–2 years: “Ask them to find objects for you or name body parts and objects.”

What is an easy Thanksgiving craft for a two-year-old?

In our plan it is the leaf turkey on a paper plate: your toddler presses leaves around the rim with a glue stick and you add a paper head. It rates 2 on our Mess Scale; the idea comes from CDC’s tips page for toddlers 1–2 years, and the band is the source of the idea, not an age limit.

What date is Thanksgiving this year?

Thursday, November 26, 2026, on OPM’s federal holiday list; the next one is Thursday, November 25, 2027.
