How this calculator works
We priced a core 18-piece per-size wardrobe (8 bodysuits, 4 footed sleepers, 2 two-piece sets, 1 cardigan or layer, 1 hat, 2 pairs of socks) using regular (list) prices from a set of 110 prices for 23 brands sold in the US (recorded 12 September 2026 in size 3-6M; 108 of the 110 are used here), then multiplied across the roughly 4.5 clothing-tag sizes a baby moves through in year one (newborn bought light). Budget uses the lowest regular price found for each item across brands, premium the highest (hat-and-mitten sets left out), and mid-priced the median regular price across brands. Each tier mixes brands; it is not one brand's wardrobe.
Is the mid figure what a typical family spends?
No. The mid tier is the median regular (list) price across the brands we priced, not what a typical family spends. We did not measure what parents spend. And these are regular (list) prices: gifts, hand-me-downs, secondhand, sales and registries can all pull real out-of-pocket spend lower. This is a price estimate, not financial advice.
