- A single short-sleeve bodysuit runs from $2.50 to $24 (typical $15.10); a footed sleeper from $4.50 to $49.
- The full six-item set ranges from about $38 at the value end to $215 at the premium end — and the true budget floor is lower still (see the coverage note).
- The cheapest option for almost every item is a mass-market brand on sale; the priciest is a premium or organic label at list price.
- Prices are what we observed in September 2026 and include current promotions — a real snapshot of what a parent pays that week, not list prices only.
What each baby basic costs
For each item we recorded the current price at every brand that sells it, then took the per-unit figure (a five-pack of bodysuits counts as five). “Typical” is the median across brands.

Prices observed September 2026 on each brand’s own US product pages or, where a brand’s own site could not be read, at a US retailer or authorized reseller, including any current promotion. Per-unit figures are derived from the pack size sold. One outlier: the $0.74 hat is a Gerber 2-pack on clearance at $1.47 ($0.74 per hat), about 87% off the pack’s $12 regular price — treat it as a floor, not a typical price.

Value-tier baskets lean on current sale prices; the premium baskets are mostly list price — so this is a snapshot of what you’d actually pay that week, not a controlled list-vs-list comparison. Even so, the gap is real: dressing a baby in the same basics costs roughly five to six times more at the premium end than the value end (see whether name-brand baby clothes are worth it).
How to spend less without buying disposable clothes

We defined one fixed six-piece starter basket — a short-sleeve bodysuit, a footed sleeper, a two-piece set, a cardigan, a hat, and a pack of socks, at the 3–6 month size — and recorded the current price of the closest equivalent on each brand’s own US site or, where that site could not be read, at a US retailer or authorized reseller, in September 2026. Multipack prices were divided to a per-unit figure. This is Edition 1, and we plan to re-run it each quarter to build a price-over-time series.
Coverage note (honest): we captured verified prices for 23 brands. A handful could not be price-checked automatically this round — most importantly the mass-retailer house brands sold only through Walmart and Amazon (Garanimals, Simple Joys by Carter’s, Amazon Essentials), plus H&M, Zara, OshKosh, Hanna Andersson and Patagonia. Because the missing brands include the very cheapest (Walmart-tier), the true budget floor is below the $38 shown here — we would rather say that plainly than publish a number we could not verify. Those brands are first on the list for the next edition.
