The same baby size label means different things at different brands. We read 30 brands' published size charts: the 3-6M label alone tops out anywhere from 14.5 to 20 lb depending on the brand. This Index shows the spread for every label, whose published charts cover heavier or lighter babies under the same label, and how to buy by weight instead of by label.
- Across 30 published charts, every label from 0-3M to 2T varies by several pounds between the smallest and largest brand.
- Weight and height beat age: a baby can be one label in one brand and two labels away in another.
- Where a label "covers heavier" or "covers lighter" babies below, that describes the brand's published limits against the median. We did not handle or test any garment.
- Charts change. Every range is dated, and the brand's current chart wins.
How much does the same label vary across brands?
For each label, the table shows how many brands publish it, the range of their stated upper weight limit, the spread between the smallest and largest brand, the median, and the stated upper height limit. Everything comes from the brands' own charts, retrieved on the date in the sources list.
| Label | Brands publishing it | Upper weight limit across brands (lb) | Spread (lb) | Median (lb) | Upper height limit (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preemie | 14 | 5-7 | 2 | 5.5 | 17-19 |

What stands out in the data?
- The same '0-3M' label tops out anywhere from 11 lb to 15 lb across 24 brands' published charts — a 4 lb spread.
- The same '3-6M' label tops out anywhere from 14.5 lb to 20 lb across 26 brands' published charts — a 5.5 lb spread.
- The same '6-9M' label tops out anywhere from 18 lb to 22 lb across 20 brands' published charts — a 4 lb spread.
- The same '9-12M' label tops out anywhere from 22 lb to 26 lb across 17 brands' published charts — a 4 lb spread.
- The same '12-18M' label tops out anywhere from 24 lb to 28 lb across 26 brands' published charts — a 4 lb spread.
- The same '18-24M' label tops out anywhere from 26 lb to 32 lb across 25 brands' published charts — a 6 lb spread.
- The same '2T' label tops out anywhere from 28 lb to 33 lb across 16 brands' published charts — a 5 lb spread.
- The Children's Place's published upper limit for 6-9M (22 lb) equals Walmart Garanimals's upper limit for the next label up (its 9-12M-equivalent, 22 lb) — the same baby lands one label apart depending on the brand.
- Everyday charts whose published upper limits sit above the label median (the label covers heavier babies on paper): Patagonia (baby) (+1.5 lb avg), The Children's Place (+1.2 lb avg), Gap (babyGap) (+0.9 lb avg), Amazon Essentials (baby) (+0.7 lb avg). Below the median (the label covers lighter babies on paper): Primary (-0.7 lb avg), Target Cat & Jack (-1.0 lb avg), Nike (infant/toddler) (-1.1 lb avg), Old Navy (-1.5 lb avg).
- Several brands publish the same grid: the Carter's grid (also used by OshKosh B'gosh and Simple Joys), the Gap grid (also used by Colored Organics), the EU height grid shared by H&M and Zara with different age labels, and the Kyte Baby grid (identical at KicKee Pants). A few charts are de facto standards adopted across brands.
Whose labels cover heavier or lighter babies on the published charts?
We compared each brand's published upper weight limit with the median for that label, then averaged across the labels the brand publishes (minimum three). A positive number means the brand's limits sit above the median (its labels cover a heavier baby); negative means below. This describes the charts only: cut, stretch and fabric also change how a piece fits, and we say so plainly on our sizes-by-brand guide. Sleepwear-led charts (KicKee Pants, Kyte Baby, Little Sleepies, Magnetic Me, Posh Peanut) are left out of this table because U.S. children's sleepwear is sized close to the body by design under the CPSC children's sleepwear regulations (garments must be snug-fitting or flame-resistant), so those charts are built on a different basis; they stay in the label table above.
| Brand | Avg. published upper limit vs. label median (lb) | Labels compared |
|---|---|---|
| Patagonia (baby) | +1.5 | 10 |
| The Children's Place | +1.2 | 11 |

| Amazon Essentials (baby) | +0.7 | 8 |
| Mini Boden | +0.7 | 6 |
| Hatley | +0.6 | 12 |
| Gerber Childrenswear | +0.4 | 11 |
| Burt's Bees Baby | +0.3 | 12 |
| Carter's | +0.2 | 13 |
| Quincy Mae | +0.2 | 7 |
| L.L.Bean (baby) | +0.2 | 4 |
| Hudson Baby | +0.1 | 11 |
| Monica + Andy | -0.1 | 8 |
| Janie and Jack | -0.1 | 8 |
| Tea Collection | -0.1 | 10 |

How should you use this when buying?
- Weigh and measure your baby (or use the last pediatric visit numbers you already have).
- Open the brand's own chart and pick by weight and height, not by the age on the label. Our baby clothes sizes by age guide gives the typical ranges if you want a starting point.
- Crossing brands or countries? The size converter translates US, UK, EU and AU labels.
- Buying ahead for a gift or a season? Read what size to buy ahead first, and browse by age at baby and toddler.
- Weight first, height second, label last.
- If two brands disagree, trust the chart of the brand you are buying.
- Sleepwear is cut snug by design; do not use this Index to size sleepwear up.
- Re-check charts each season; this Index is dated.
Methodology and sources
30 brand-published charts, retrieved 2026-09-02: 25 read from the brand's own chart page and 5 from the brand's published chart image (Kyte Baby, Magnetic Me, KicKee Pants, Monica + Andy, Quincy Mae). For each chart we recorded the stated weight and height limits for every baby and toddler label and aligned labels by the brand's printed age band (so "3M", "0-3 months" and "0/3" map to 0-3M, and a brand whose "3M" is printed as 3-6 months is aligned to 3-6M). Where a chart is in kilograms or centimeters we converted to pounds and inches and rounded to one decimal. Printed zeros and one printed typo were excluded from calculation and kept in the notes. Charts that are identical across brands are counted once in the statistics and reported as a finding: the Carter's grid (also used by OshKosh B'gosh and Simple Joys), the Gap grid (also used by Colored Organics), the Kyte Baby grid (identical at KicKee Pants), and Walmart's Garanimals chart (identical to the Wonder Nation asset). H&M and Zara publish an EU height grid without weights and with their own age bands, so they appear as a finding, not in the label statistics; 26 distinct grids enter the statistics. Where a brand splits toddler charts by gender we used the chart only when the girls' and boys' values are identical, and otherwise stopped at 24M. Sleepwear-led charts (sized close to the body under the CPSC children's sleepwear regulations linked above) are marked in the sources and excluded from the heavier/lighter comparison. One brand's chart is published on its own Amazon listing rather than a brand website and is marked as such; one capture is partial and is marked. We did not handle or test any garment. Brands with no published chart, or whose chart could not be loaded on the retrieval date, are not included. This is a comparison of published information, not a claim about any brand's quality, and it is not growth or medical guidance.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the same baby size label vary between brands?
In the 30 published charts we compared, the 3-6M label's upper weight limit ranges from 14.5 to 20 lb, a 5.5 lb spread. Most labels vary by several pounds between the smallest and largest brand.
Which brands have labels that cover heavier babies on their published charts?
Comparing each brand's published upper limits with the label median: Patagonia (baby) (about +1.5 lb), The Children's Place (about +1.2 lb), Gap (babyGap) (about +0.9 lb), Amazon Essentials (baby) (about +0.7 lb), Mini Boden (about +0.7 lb). That describes the charts; we did not handle or test any garment.
Which brands have labels that cover lighter babies on their published charts?
Comparing each brand's published upper limits with the label median: Hanna Andersson (about -0.6 lb), Primary (about -0.7 lb), Target Cat & Jack (about -1.0 lb), Nike (infant/toddler) (about -1.1 lb), Old Navy (about -1.5 lb). Check the brand chart before you buy, because charts change.
Should I buy baby clothes by age or by weight?
By weight and height. Age labels are a loose shorthand; the published limits show that a 9-12M in one brand can match a 6-9M in another. Use the weight column of the brand's own chart, then our sizes-by-age guide for the typical ranges.
How often do brands change their size charts?
Often enough that we date this Index. Every range here was read from the brand's published chart on the retrieval date shown in the sources list. Treat it as a comparison of what brands state, and confirm the current chart on the brand site before ordering.
