By the Babbez team · Brand size charts read September 24, 2026
The most common Size 1 label is 8 to 14 lb, printed exactly by Pampers, Huggies, Honest, Seventh Generation and DYPER; across the charts of 13 diaper brands sold in the US that Babbez read on 24 September 2026, Size 1 starts at 6 to 8 lb and tops out at 11 to 14 lb, except Bambo Nature (4–9 lb).
Bambo Nature's sizes run on a different ladder (its Size 0 is 2–6 lb and its Size 1 is 4–9 lb), so compare by weight, not by the number on the pack.
Key takeaways
- 5 of the 13 brands print exactly 8 to 14 lb for Size 1.
- Newborn and Size 1 overlap: at the 11 brands that list a Newborn size, it tops out at 9 to 10 lb and Size 1 starts at 6 to 8 lb.
- The same size number means different weights at different brands: Size 2 is 10-22 lb at Pampers and 12-18 lb at Huggies.
This page lists the weight ranges diaper manufacturers print on their own charts. It is not medical or growth advice, and Babbez does not say which size fits your baby. For questions about weight or growth, ask your pediatrician; see our medical disclaimer.

- A dash means the chart lists no such size. Seventh Generation, HealthyBaby, Parasol, Kudos and Bambo Nature stop at Size 6; Kudos lists no Newborn size.
- Bambo Nature's smallest size is Size 0, shown in the Newborn column.
- Pampers, Huggies and Hello Bello also list a Size 8: 30+ lb, over 46 lb and 46+ lb.
- Preemie appears on the Pampers and Huggies charts only. The Pampers preemie page splits it into P1 under 6 lb, P2 under 4 lb, P3 under 1.8 lb and Pxxs under 1 lb, and notes that hospitals typically provide these sizes. For clothes, see our preemie baby clothes size chart.
Why does the same diaper size cover different weights at different brands?
Because each manufacturer sets its own ladder, and the 13 charts we compared do not follow one shared scale. The honest answer to "what weight is Size 2?" is "whose Size 2?". The charts we compared differ in three ways.
The ladder starts in a different place
Bambo Nature starts at Size 0 (2-6 lb), so its Size 3 is 9-18 lb, the same range Millie Moon and Rascals print for Size 2. Millie Moon and Rascals start Size 1 at 6 lb and Size 2 at 9 lb; Pampers starts them at 8 and 10 lb, Huggies at 8 and 12 lb.
Some ranges are wide and some are narrow
Pampers prints wide, overlapping ranges: Size 2 is 10-22 lb, Size 3 is 13-26 lb and Size 4 is 15-34 lb. Huggies, Honest and DYPER print narrower ones: 12-18 lb, 16-28 lb and 22-37 lb. So 20 lb falls inside Pampers Sizes 2, 3, 4 and 5, and inside Huggies Size 3 only.
The top sizes are often open-ended
From Size 5 up, Huggies, Coterie, Hello Bello, Honest, DYPER and Kudos print only a starting weight, such as "27+ lbs". Pampers still prints a top: its Size 5 is 20-37 lb.
Clothing labels vary the same way: see our Baby Clothing Size Index and our baby clothes sizes by age chart.
When do brands say to move from Newborn to Size 1?
Pampers and Huggies both say their diaper sizes are based on weight, not age, and the two sizes overlap. Newborn labels top out at 9 to 10 lb at the 11 brands that list a Newborn size, while Size 1 at those brands starts at 6 to 8 lb, so a baby between those weights is inside both printed ranges. So what size diapers newborns wear is, on these charts, a question of weight rather than age.
What the manufacturers say (their statements, not Babbez advice):
- Pampers says its Newborn size is "typically used for the first month", and that you may switch to Size 1 at around 8 lb if your baby is growing quickly.
- Huggies says many babies outgrow newborn diapers "within the first month or two", and that every baby grows at their own pace.
- Rascals says both its Size N and its Size 1 are suitable for a newborn.
- Between two sizes, Pampers says to check the diaper fit to decide, while Millie Moon and Rascals suggest the smaller size first.
To use any chart you need a current weight; our guide to measuring a baby at home shows the bathroom-scale method.
How long do babies stay in each diaper size?
Pampers and Huggies each print an estimate beside their weight chart. We relay the figures as printed and add none of our own.
| Size | Pampers estimate (months) | Huggies estimate (months) |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn | 1.6 | 1 |
| Size 1 | 1.7 | 1.5 |
| Size 2 | 2.8 | 3 |
| Size 3 | 5.8 | 7 |
| Size 4 | 6.8 | 8 |
| Size 5 | 5.0 | 6 |
| Size 6 | 5.8 | 3.5 |
| Size 7 | 4.1 | Varies |
On both charts the longest stretch is Size 4 (6.8 months at Pampers, 8 months at Huggies) and the shortest are Newborn and Size 1, each under two months. Both manufacturers call these estimates and say babies grow at different rates. Packing for a day out? See our diaper bag essentials checklist.
How was this index built, and which brands are missing?
The sample: 13 diaper brands sold in the US, read on September 24, 2026. Counts are by brand. We read each brand's own public page, saved it, and copied the weight ranges as printed. We compared labels only and did not handle or test any diaper.
- Hello Bello's ranges come from the size selector on its product page.
- Kudos announced adjusted ranges for Sizes 4 to 6 on January 20, 2026; the table shows its current chart (20-32 lb, 25+ lb, 32+ lb). Packs printed earlier may show other ranges.
- Not included: Luvs, whose shop page prints no weight ranges (its FAQ says the ranges on its packages overlap), and Kirkland Signature (Costco), up&up (Target) and Parent's Choice (Walmart), sold through retailer sites we did not read for this edition.
Brands revise their charts. If a range here differs from the pack in your hand, the pack and the brand's page are right. See also our baby size charts by brand and our editorial standards.
Frequently asked questions
Is size 1 bigger than newborn
Yes. On every chart we compared that lists both, Size 1 is the next size up: Newborn tops out at 9 to 10 lb and Size 1 at 11 to 14 lb. The two overlap, because Size 1 starts at 6 to 8 lb.
Can a 9 lb baby wear size 1
By the printed labels, 9 lb is inside the Size 1 range at all 13 brands in our table (the top of the range at Bambo Nature) and inside the Newborn range at 10 of the 11 brands with a Newborn size (all but Millie Moon, under 9 lb). Pampers says to check the diaper fit when a baby is between sizes.
Do diaper sizes vary by brand
Yes. Each manufacturer sets its own ranges, and the 13 charts we compared do not follow one shared scale. Size 2 is 10-22 lb at Pampers, 12-18 lb at Huggies and 7-13 lb at Bambo Nature. Compare the weight range, not the size number.
